Active surfaces engineered by immobilizing protein-polymer nanoreactors for selectively detecting sugar alcohols.

We introduce active surfaces generated by immobilizing protein-polymer nanoreactors on a solid support for sensitive sugar alcohols detection. First, such selective nanoreactors were engineered in solution by simultaneous encapsulation of specific enzymes in copolymer polymersomes, and insertion of membrane proteins for selective conduct of sugar alcohols. RECENT FINDINGS: The perception of sweet taste is mediated by the type 1 taste receptor 2 (T1R2)/type 1 taste receptor 3 (T1R3) receptor, which is expressed in the oral cavity, where it provides input on the caloric and macronutrient contents of ingested food. Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a condition characterized by abdominal pain, bloating, flatus, and altered bowel habits. The role of dietary components in inducing IBS symptoms is difficult to explore. To date, foods are not considered a cause but rather symptom-triggering factors. Thermal, spectroscopic and crystallographic analysis of mannose-derived linear polyols

The major diastereomer formed in the Barbier-type metal-mediated allylation of D-mannose has previously been shown to adopt a perfectly linear conformation, both in solid state and in solution, resulting in the formation of hydrogen-bonded networks and subsequent aggregation from aqueous solution upon stirring. From strong to fragile glass formers: secondary relaxation in polyalcohols.

We have studied details of the molecular origin of slow secondary relaxation near T(g) in a series of neat polyalcohols by means of dielectric spectroscopy and (2)H NMR. From glycerol to threitol, xylitol, and sorbitol the appearance of the secondary relaxation changes gradually from a wing-type scenario to a pronounced beta peak. It is found that in sorbitol the dynamics of the whole molecule contributes equally to the beta process, while in glycerol the hydrogen bond forming OH groups remain rather rigid compared to the hydrogens bonded to the carbon skeleton.

Insight into the structure and inhibition mechanism of O-β-d-glucosidases by deoxa-pyranosylamine type inhibitors is provided by X-ray analysis of complexes between raucaffricine and strictosidine glucosidases and N-(cyclohexylmethyl)-, N-(cyclohexyl)- and N-(bromobenzyl)-β-d-gluco-1,5-deoxa-pyranosylamine. All inhibitors anchored exclusively in the catalytic active site by competition with appropriate enzyme substrates. Crystal structure of lactitol (4-O-beta-D-galactopyranosyl-D-glucitol).

Abstract Lacitol, C 12 H 24 O 11 , is monoclinic, space group P 2 1 with cell dimensions a = 7.614(1), b = 10.757(1), c = 9.370(1) A, β = 108.19(1)°, and V = 729.0(1) A 3 ; Z = 2, D x = 1.57 Mg.m −3 , λ(Cu- K α ) = 1.5406 A, μ = 1.166 mm −1 , F (000) = 368, and T = 23°. The structure was solved by direct methods and refined by least-squares calculations to R = 0.048 for 1510 unique observed reflections. There are one intra- and eight inter-molecular hydrogen bonds in the structure. Bond lengths and angles accord well with the mean values of related structures. The galactopyranosyl ring has a chair conformation.

Lactitol in treatment of chronic hepatic encephalopathy. A meta-analysis.

The efficacy and side effects of lactitol in the treatment of chronic hepatic encephalopathy was compared to that of other disaccharides in a meta-analysis of published randomized clinical trials (RCTs). The outcomes assessed were: (1) the rate of patients free from episodes of clinically detectable encephalopathy, and (2) the rate of patients free from one or more side effects in the different treatment groups. Four RCTs were eligible for analysis; in three lactitol was compared to lactulose, in one the alternative treatment was lactose in lactase-deficient patients. Specific stress-induced storage of trehalose, glycerol and D-arabitol in response to oxidative and osmotic stress in Candida albicans.

Candida albicans exponential yeast cells are able to face environmental challenges by mounting a rapid and efficient "general stress response". Here we show that one of the main components of this response consists of the intracellular protective accumulation of the non-reducing disaccharide trehalose and two polyols, glycerol and D-arabitol, an accumulation that occurs in a stress-specific dependent manner.
